Your Hainan Airlines flight lands in Haikou, on the northern side of Hainan Island, but many of the island's best-known beach resorts are concentrated around Sanya in the south. Fortunately, regular fast rail connections make it practical to continue across the island after arrival.
If the idea is to start the holiday slowly, I would spend most of the 6-night Hainan stay around Sanya. The value can be excellent: selected 5-star resorts can start from around £50 per room per night, and some properties also sell meal-plan or all-inclusive-style packages. Hong Kong is a very different market, where a realistic target for a well-rated 4- or 5-star hotel is around £120+ per night.
Haikou is where the London flight arrives, but if beaches and resort time are the priority, I would use the rail connection to continue south to Sanya. That lets you turn the first half of this 2-in-1 trip into a proper tropical break rather than a city-only stay.
Spend most of the six Hainan nights near the coast and use Sanya as the relaxing start to the holiday.
The regular fast-train connection makes it practical to travel from the north of the island toward the southern resorts.
If you do not want another transfer immediately after the long-haul arrival, overnight in Haikou and travel south the next morning.
For travellers looking for a relaxing start to the trip, this is exactly the type of Hainan hotel I would consider. Sanya Dadonghai Seaview Hotel sits directly by the beach in the Dadonghai area and combines a resort-style setting with very strong guest feedback.
The displayed listing shows an excellent 9.2/10 guest rating and an even stronger 9.6/10 location score. The property offers direct beach access, swimming pools, restaurants, a fitness centre, free Wi-Fi, free parking and room service.
The main attraction here is the value. For the six-night reference stay, the displayed Superior Room starts at around £451 total, or roughly £75 per room per night. Ocean-view categories are available at higher prices, while the wider Sanya market can produce selected 5-star deals from around £50 per night.
That makes Sanya especially appealing if you want the first half of the trip to feel like a proper resort holiday before switching completely to the energy, skyline and food scene of Hong Kong.
Dadonghai, Sanya

Hong Kong hotel prices are considerably higher than Sanya. For a well-rated 4- or 5-star property in a genuinely convenient location, I would budget around £120+ per room per night, with harbour views, flexible cancellation and breakfast often pushing the total higher.
The flight itinerary gives you a full week in Hong Kong, enough time for Kowloon, Hong Kong Island, markets, viewpoints, food and at least one slower day.
A useful planning range for a well-rated 4- or 5-star property in a central transport-friendly area.
Good MTR access is one of the easiest ways to make a Hong Kong stay work smoothly without paying purely for a harbour-front address.
The Royal Garden Tsim Sha Tsui is a very different proposition from the Sanya resort: here you are paying for a strong city location, transport convenience and a full-service 5-star base in one of the most useful parts of Kowloon.
The displayed listing shows an 8.7/10 guest rating from more than 2,400 reviews and a strong 9.3/10 location score. The hotel sits on Mody Road in Tsim Sha Tsui, within easy reach of the waterfront, Avenue of Stars, restaurants and MTR connections.
One of the standout features is the rooftop Mediterranean-style Sky Club with a heated swimming pool and hot tub. The hotel also offers a fitness centre, spa facilities, free Wi-Fi and multiple dining options, making it particularly comfortable for a full seven-night city stay.
For the displayed 7-14 October week, the lowest Deluxe Queen or Twin rate was approximately £968 total, or around £138 per room per night. A flexible rate was around £1,139, while breakfast-inclusive options were higher again.
