China stay lengths vary by date, so Shanghai can either be the entire destination or the starting point for a wider China itinerary. If you have 6 nights or more in China, I would seriously consider adding at least one easy side trip.
For a short stopover I would prioritise convenience. You do not need to change hotels: keep one Bahrain base for all 3 nights and use taxis or tours for sightseeing.
Shanghai is enormous, so location matters. For a first visit I would stay somewhere that makes sightseeing easy rather than simply choosing the cheapest hotel.
4–5 nights Shanghai + 1 day trip to Suzhou or Zhujiajiao.
Keep one Shanghai hotel and avoid overcomplicating the trip.
4 nights Shanghai + 2 nights Hangzhou + 2–3 additional nights in Shanghai or Suzhou.
4 nights Shanghai + 2 nights Hangzhou / Suzhou + 5–6 nights Beijing or another major destination.
With this much time, I would definitely not stay only in Shanghai.
China is huge. For a first trip, Shanghai + one nearby destination is enough for shorter stays. Add Beijing only when the itinerary gives you enough nights to enjoy both cities properly.
