A very strong Etihad Airways Business Class fare from Chicago to Mumbai with only one connection in Abu Dhabi each way.
The cheapest booking I found is around $2,694 return with Trip.com.
Etihad is also selling the same trip directly for around $2,805.69.
That makes the airline-direct option only about $112 more, so I would personally favour booking directly with Etihad.
The displayed Business Value fare includes 2 x 32 kg checked baggage plus 1 carry-on piece.
Lounge access is not included with this fare.

Trip.com showed the lowest fare at around $2,694 return. Etihad's own website showed the Business Value fare at $2,805.69 return. Prices can change quickly, so always compare the final payment total before booking.
This is where the direct-airline option becomes particularly attractive.
Trip.com was around $2,694, while Etihad itself was around $2,806.
For a long-haul Business Class ticket, I would personally pay the roughly $112 premium
and keep the booking directly with the operating airline.
The outbound timing is also much better than some of the alternative schedules:
a 14:00 departure from Chicago, only 1h45 in Abu Dhabi,
and a very civilised 19:00 arrival into Mumbai.
The displayed Etihad fare is Business Value.
It includes 2 x 32 kg checked baggage and one carry-on piece,

The cheapest Business Value fare shown is also non-refundable,
and the Etihad screen indicates a change fee from around US$480.
The return connection is efficient, but the 02:55 Abu Dhabi departure falls at a less comfortable sleeping time.
September is also still within Mumbai's wetter monsoon period, although October dates improve the seasonal picture.
Trip.com produced the lowest price I found for the reference Business Class itinerary.
The saving is useful, but not large enough that I would automatically choose the OTA over Etihad itself.

At only about $112 more than Trip.com, this is the booking option I would personally choose.
On a long-haul Business Class ticket, having the airline issue and service the booking directly is worth the small premium.
I found 7 combinations from late August through October 2026, with stays ranging from roughly 10 to 16 nights. The highlighted 9-23 September option is the reference itinerary used for the fare comparison above.
A very strong Etihad Business Class fare with excellent baggage, efficient one-stop routing, a much improved outbound schedule and only a small premium for booking directly with Etihad. The Business Value restrictions, no lounge access, the overnight return connection and weaker September seasonality stop it from scoring even higher.

New communityMumbai is enormous, and traffic can make apparently short journeys take much longer than expected. For a first visit I would choose the hotel based on the part of the city you actually want to explore, rather than simply taking the cheapest well-rated option.
For most first-time visitors, I would spend around 3 nights in Mumbai. That is enough for the major South Mumbai sights, food, markets and one more relaxed evening. If you want to add Elephanta Caves, Bollywood-related experiences or explore the suburbs properly, 4 nights gives the trip a much better pace.
Mumbai can fill anything from two days to a week, but for this fare I would treat it as the gateway to a wider India trip. Three nights is the sweet spot for most travellers; four nights makes sense if you want to slow down or add a longer excursion.
Spend two full days around South Mumbai and one evening exploring food, markets or another neighbourhood.
Better if you want Elephanta Caves, Bollywood-related sightseeing, Bandra, Juhu or simply less time spent rushing between areas.
If you add another Indian destination on a separate ticket, I would still return to Mumbai at least one night before the Etihad flight home. The long-haul return departs at 23:10, but a buffer protects the trip from domestic delays or cancellations.
For a three-night stay, I would focus on South Mumbai first, then use the final day or evening for Bandra, food, markets or one longer excursion rather than trying to cross the entire city repeatedly.
Start with Mumbai's most recognisable waterfront area, then explore Colaba, nearby museums and the historic streets of South Mumbai.
Combine Marine Drive with the Victorian and Art Deco districts, Churchgate and the magnificent Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.
A classic half- or full-day addition from the Gateway of India if you have enough time and want to add one of Mumbai's UNESCO-listed heritage experiences.
Use one evening for Mumbai's street food, Parsi cuisine, cafés or Bandra's restaurant scene rather than treating the city only as a sightseeing checklist.
With the reference trip lasting around two weeks, Mumbai should probably be the beginning and end of the holiday rather than the only destination. These are three extensions I would seriously consider.
