The small premium is worthwhile for most travellers, especially on a multi-sector long-haul itinerary involving connections in China.
The seat product is excellent, but arriving in Chengdu at 05:00 and waiting until 08:00 can be tiring. This schedule is less suitable for families with young children, elderly travellers or anyone who struggles with disrupted sleep.

Beijing offers unusually strong value at the upper end of the hotel market. Excellent 5-star hotels can often start from approximately €80 per room per night, with even lower prices sometimes available when travellers are willing to compromise on the exact neighbourhood or distance from the main historic sights.
For a first visit, we suggest spending three or four nights in Beijing before continuing elsewhere in China. This is enough for the Forbidden City, Tiananmen area, Temple of Heaven, hutongs and one Great Wall excursion without trying to compress everything into two exhausting days.
For the first three or four nights, our pick is the New World Beijing Hotel in Dongcheng. It provides a polished 5-star base close to the historic centre while remaining practical for metro, railway and onward travel.

It is positioned near Qinian Street and the Chongwenmen area, within walking distance of the Temple of Heaven and with convenient access to Tiananmen Square, Wangfujing, Beijing Railway Station and the wider metro network.
Facilities shown include an indoor swimming pool, spa and wellness centre, fitness centre, sauna, family rooms, room service and two restaurants. The property also offers large modern rooms, making it a comfortable place to recover after the overnight journey from Europe.
