The strongest part of this deal is the combination of €1,488 return pricing, Aeromexico's 787-9 Premier One 1-2-1 full-flat Business Class on the long-haul sectors, a useful baggage allowance and 12 selected date combinations. March departures also have the better overall journey times among the schedules checked.
1. Trip.com baggage warning: Trip.com displays a notice saying checked baggage may need to be
collected and checked in again in Mexico City. However, the Aeromexico direct booking flow does not show the same warning
for this itinerary. As all sectors are on one Aeromexico itinerary, this may be a generic Trip.com notice rather than a confirmed requirement.
Confirm baggage through-checking with Aeromexico before travel.
2. Return connection: the reference itinerary has a 1h15 connection in MEX.
Trip.com flags it as short, but if baggage is checked through it becomes a much more reasonable protected connection.
I would still verify the connection and baggage handling before booking.
3. Mixed Business Class product: the Madrid-Mexico City flights use the 787-9 1-2-1 full-flat product,
while MEX-SJO uses 737 MAX 2-2 recliner Business Class.
4. Basic fare restrictions: Trip.com shows Premier One Basic as
non-refundable with no changes permitted.
5. Aircraft changes: always recheck the aircraft and seat map immediately before payment.

This is the booking option I would check first. It undercuts the airline-direct fare by around €49 and the Trip.com affiliate link is provided for every selected date below.

Check Aeromexico direct →March departures are the preferred schedules among the combinations checked because they offer better overall journey times. April departures remain useful alternatives, but some have longer Mexico City connections.
Excellent sub-€1,500 pricing, a strong 787-9 long-haul Business Class product, useful baggage and very good availability. The mixed cabin product and short 1h15 Mexico City return connection still require attention, but the baggage-recheck message appears to be a Trip.com warning that is not repeated in Aeromexico's own booking flow, so I would treat it as something to verify rather than a confirmed problem.

San José is useful as an arrival and departure point, but for most first-time visitors I would not spend a large part of a Costa Rica trip there. One or two nights is usually enough to recover from the flight, see a little of the capital and then move on to the country’s volcanoes, rainforest, wildlife and beaches.
For the reference 14-night itinerary, I would use San José mainly as a practical gateway: 1 night on arrival, then build a loop through La Fortuna / Arenal, Monteverde and the Pacific coast. Keep the final night close to San José or the airport if your return flight is early or you want to avoid a stressful long transfer on departure day.
Best areas to stay in San José
For a short stay, convenience matters more than finding the “perfect” neighbourhood.
Comfortable, modern and popular with international visitors. Good restaurants, shopping and plenty of higher-end hotels. A strong choice if you want an easy, polished base rather than staying directly in the historic centre.
Good for museums, historic architecture and seeing more of central San José. Better for travellers who actually want to explore the capital rather than just sleep near the airport.
One of the most appealing areas for cafés, restaurants and nightlife. A good option for one or two nights if you want somewhere with more atmosphere in the evening.
Best for the final night if you have an early departure. Juan Santamaría Airport is actually closer to Alajuela than central San José, so this can save time and stress.
