Geneva is one of those destinations where a very cheap flight does not automatically mean a cheap holiday. Accommodation prices can be high, especially if you want to stay close to the lake, the railway station and the city centre.
If you plan to spend the full 25 January-1 February trip in Geneva and use the city for occasional day trips, our practical choice is ibis Genève Centre Lac. It is not a luxury hotel, but it gives you a recognised brand, a central location near the railway station and straightforward accommodation in a city where even simple rooms can cost a significant amount.
For Geneva alone, I would normally suggest 3-4 nights. The city is compact enough to cover the main sights without needing an entire week. The 7-night flight combination becomes much more attractive if you use Geneva as a base for day trips to Lausanne, Montreux, nearby Alpine towns or the French Alps.
Enough for the lakefront, Old Town, museums, restaurants and a relaxed city break without paying Geneva hotel prices for longer than necessary.
Works best if you keep one Geneva hotel and add several day trips rather than spending every day only in the city.
If accommodation cost matters more than convenience, compare surrounding towns or split the stay instead of automatically booking seven nights in central Geneva.
If the plan is to stay in Geneva for the entire week and make occasional day trips, I would look for something simple, central and reliable rather than spending heavily on a luxury hotel. ibis Genève Centre Lac fits that approach well.
The attached Booking.com listing shows an 8.0/10 guest rating from more than 5,000 reviews. It is located at 26 Rue de Berne in the Pâquis area, with the listing highlighting railway access and a very convenient position near central Geneva.
The hotel is intentionally straightforward: modern rooms, private bathrooms, air conditioning, free Wi-Fi, a bar, lounge space, 24-hour reception and breakfast options. This is not the sort of property you book for a spa weekend or resort experience; you book it because you want a practical place to sleep in an expensive city while spending most of the day outside.
For the reference 7-night stay, the lowest displayed double-room rate was around £713 total, including taxes and charges. For two people sharing, that works out at approximately £357 per person for the full week, or roughly £51 per person per night.
A more flexible rate was shown around £851 per room, equivalent to roughly £426 per person for seven nights when two share. Breakfast-included options were shown from around £969 per room, so I would compare the cost of eating breakfast locally before automatically upgrading.
The key here is perspective: the flight costs only £63 return, while the hotel can easily cost several times more. That does not make the trip bad value, but it is exactly why Geneva needs to be planned as a complete trip budget rather than judged only by the airfare.

Practical 3-star city base
In a city this expensive, location matters because staying too far out can save money on the hotel while adding inconvenience every day. For a short or week-long first visit, I would focus on areas with easy access to the lake and public transport.
Spend time around the lake, Jet d'Eau and central waterfront rather than treating Geneva only as an airport gateway.
Explore the historic centre, St Pierre Cathedral area, cafés and small streets on foot.
The UN and international-organisation district adds a side of Geneva that is quite different from a typical Alpine city break.
With seven nights, do not over-plan Geneva itself. Leave several days for rail or mountain excursions outside the city.
This is where the 7-night fare becomes much more interesting. Geneva is an excellent gateway to the lake region and the Alps, so I would use at least two or three days outside the city.
