Excellent direct long-haul value to Hainan Island with 23 kg checked baggage included, but only a limited number of dates were found.
A rare direct flight deal from London to tropical Hainan Island
Direct return flights from London Heathrow to Haikou are available from around £582 with Hainan Airlines. The fare includes 23 kg checked baggage, cabin baggage and full-service long-haul flights.
The biggest advantage is the routing: both flights are nonstop. The outbound journey takes approximately 12 hours 5 minutes, while the return takes around 13 hours 10 minutes. There are no connections, airport changes or long overnight waits.
The schedule is also practical. The outbound leaves Heathrow at approximately 19:45 and arrives in Haikou at 15:50 the following day. The return departs Haikou at 11:10 and lands in London at 16:20.
Hainan Island is known for tropical beaches, resorts, rainforest scenery, hot springs and warm winter weather. Haikou is the main gateway in the north, while travellers looking for the island’s best-known beach resorts may also consider continuing south towards Sanya.
The main weakness is availability. Only a limited number of date combinations were found in November and March, so the lowest fares may disappear quickly.
Haikou is located in northern Hainan. Travellers mainly interested in luxury beach resorts and the island’s most famous tropical coastline should also compare transfers or domestic transport to Sanya in the south. Allow enough time and budget for the onward journey.
Best travel periods: November and March are attractive months for warmer weather, beach time and outdoor sightseeing without the most intense summer heat.
Best for: winter-sun travellers, beach holidays, China explorers, resort stays, tropical nature and travellers who value direct flights and checked baggage.
Less ideal for: travellers who require wide date flexibility or those expecting Haikou Airport to be directly beside Hainan’s main southern beach resorts.

Where to stay in Hainan: treat yourself to 5-star luxury for less
Hainan Island is one of those rare destinations where travellers can enjoy a genuinely luxurious stay without paying typical European resort prices. The island offers a wide selection of impressive 5-star hotels and beachfront resorts from just £50 per night.
That works out at an almost unbelievable £25 per person per night when travelling as a couple — cheaper than a hostel bed in some major European capitals. It makes Hainan particularly attractive for travellers who want large rooms, swimming pools, spa facilities and resort-style comfort on a reasonable budget.
Haikou is the arrival point for these direct flights and can be a useful base for the first or final night. However, many of Hainan’s most impressive beach resorts are located around Sanya, on the island’s southern coast.
Sanya can be reached from Haikou in approximately 1 hour 30 minutes to 2 hours by high-speed train. Travellers looking for beaches, warmer resort weather and a classic tropical holiday should consider spending most of their trip there rather than remaining in Haikou for the entire stay.
Popular areas around Sanya include Sanya Bay for convenience and better-value hotels, Dadonghai for restaurants and easy beach access, and Yalong Bay or Haitang Bay for larger luxury resorts and a quieter atmosphere.
Dino tip: check whether breakfast, pool access, beach facilities and local taxes are included in the final price. Also compare the hotel’s distance from the high-speed railway station and airport, as Hainan’s resort areas can be spread out.
Search and compare hotels in Hainan →Hotel prices and availability can change quickly. Always check the final total, location, reviews, taxes, breakfast, cancellation policy, distance from the beach and transport costs between Haikou and Sanya before booking.
