Lagos is a huge city, so choosing the right base can make a major difference to the trip. For a first visit, we would normally prioritise Victoria Island, Ikoyi or Lekki Phase 1 rather than choosing a hotel purely because it is the cheapest option.
Lagos traffic can be extremely time-consuming, so choose your hotel according to what you plan to do rather than simply comparing nightly prices.
Victoria Island is probably the easiest all-round base for a
first-time visitor.
It offers a large choice of international and upscale hotels,
restaurants, cafés, nightlife and business facilities while keeping
many popular areas of Lagos Island within reasonable reach.
This is where I would begin the hotel search for most travellers
arriving from London.
Ikoyi is a more residential and generally calmer alternative to
Victoria Island.
It is particularly attractive for travellers looking for an
upscale hotel, quieter evenings and a comfortable base rather than
being directly in the middle of the nightlife.
Victoria Island remains close enough for restaurants and evening
plans.
Lekki Phase 1 has developed into one of Lagos's most active
lifestyle districts.
It works particularly well for younger travellers, longer stays or
anyone interested in restaurants, cafés, nightlife and attractions
around the Lekki area.
The disadvantage is distance: traffic can make journeys towards
other parts of Lagos surprisingly long.
Ikeja can make sense for an airport overnight, a very early flight or a
business trip centred on the mainland.
For a leisure visit, however, we would normally prefer
Victoria Island, Ikoyi or Lekki and accept the longer
airport transfer rather than spend the entire stay near the airport.
Lagos is more about experiencing the city than ticking off a long list of monuments. Allow enough time for traffic, restaurants, art, neighbourhoods and some slower days.
Three nights work when Lagos is only the entry point to a wider
West African trip.
Keep the itinerary relatively light and concentrate on one or two
parts of the city rather than trying to cross Lagos repeatedly.
Four nights give enough time to settle in, explore the island areas,
visit galleries or markets, enjoy the restaurant scene and still
have some flexibility for Lagos traffic.
This would be our preferred length for most first-time visitors.
Stay longer if Lagos itself is the purpose of the trip or if you want time for beaches, nightlife, restaurants and cultural attractions without planning every day around traffic.
Do not underestimate journey times in Lagos.
For airport transfers, especially on arrival, consider arranging a
transfer through your hotel or using a reputable pre-booked transport
service.
For normal city journeys, app-based ride services are generally more
practical for visitors than trying to navigate informal public
transport.
Avoid planning an itinerary that requires repeatedly travelling from
one side of Lagos to the other, and take extra care when moving around
after dark.
The large number of 7-, 10-, 12- and 14-night flight combinations makes this fare useful for more than a simple city break.
Accra is probably the easiest second destination to combine with
Lagos.
It provides a different West African city experience without
requiring another long-haul flight.
A four-night stay gives enough time for central Accra, food,
nightlife and coastal attractions before returning to Lagos for
the flight home.
Travellers who want to experience another side of Nigeria can
consider adding the capital.
Abuja feels very different from Lagos and can be combined by
domestic flight rather than spending long hours travelling by
road.
Check current regional travel advice before making plans.
There is nothing wrong with using the inexpensive direct fare for
a simple one-week Lagos trip.
Split the week between city experiences, restaurants, art and a
slower coastal day rather than adding another flight purely
because the ticket allows a longer stay.
