Kigali is an excellent place to start and finish a Rwanda itinerary. The city is relatively compact compared with many African capitals, easy to use as a transport base, and gives you time to understand the country before heading towards the national parks, Lake Kivu or the mountains.
For the reference 26 June-11 July trip, I would normally spend around 2-3 nights in Kigali at the beginning, then use the majority of the holiday to explore the rest of Rwanda. If your return flight leaves just after midnight, keeping the final afternoon and evening in Kigali can also make the trip much easier.
Rwanda is compact enough that Kigali works extremely well as a gateway rather than a destination where you need to spend a full week. A short stay gives you time for culture, history and food before moving into the country's strongest nature and wildlife experiences.
One arrival day, one proper city day and another flexible day is a very good balance before continuing to the rest of Rwanda.
Worth considering if you want more museums, markets, food experiences and slower-paced city time before or after the national parks.
For a short stay, I would prioritise a well-reviewed hotel in central Kigali rather than saving a small amount by staying far outside the main visitor areas.
Two or three nights is enough to get a meaningful introduction to Kigali without rushing. I would combine the city's history with its food, markets and modern cultural side.
An essential and deeply important stop for understanding Rwanda's recent history and the country's recovery.
Use part of a day for a market or neighbourhood visit to see a more everyday side of Kigali rather than staying only in hotel districts.
Kigali has a growing creative scene, so galleries, local craft spaces and cultural venues are worth building into a short stay.
The city's hills create plenty of panoramic restaurant settings, making dinner or sunset drinks an easy part of the itinerary.
Kigali sits in the centre of Rwanda, which makes it a particularly useful starting point for a much wider trip. For the two-week reference itinerary, I would spend only a small part of the holiday in the capital and use the rest for wildlife, mountains and lakes.
