Yes — Machu Picchu can absolutely fit into a 7 or 8 night Peru trip, but I would not spend the whole trip in Lima. For most first-time visitors, 2 nights in Lima is a good balance, then use the rest of the trip for Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu.
Lima deserves time for Miraflores, Barranco, the Pacific coast and its excellent food scene, but on a short Peru trip I would keep it to 2 nights. If your main goal is Machu Picchu, spending 3 or 4 nights in Lima would make the rest of the trip too rushed.
With 7 nights, Machu Picchu is possible but the itinerary needs to be quite efficient. With 8 nights, it becomes much more comfortable because you gain a useful buffer night around Cusco or Lima.
Best areas to stay in Lima
For a short first visit, I would focus on Lima's coastal neighbourhoods rather than staying near the airport or in the historic centre.
My default recommendation. Easy access to restaurants, the seafront, Parque Kennedy, Larcomar and plenty of hotels. It is the simplest area for a short first stay.
More character, nightlife, cafés and art. Great for couples and travellers who prefer a more local, creative feel.
Quieter and more polished, with excellent restaurants and upscale hotels. Better if comfort matters more than nightlife.
Useful for a late arrival or an early domestic flight, but not where I would base a first visit to Lima.
Can Machu Picchu fit into 7 nights?
A 7-night trip can work if flights and train times line up well. The key is not wasting too many nights in Lima and not trying to add too many extra destinations.
Better 8-night version
With one extra night, I would avoid rushing Machu Picchu and give yourself more breathing room at altitude.
