How long should you stay in Vientiane?
Two nights
Enough for most first-time visitors to see the central temples, Patuxai, Pha That Luang, the Mekong riverfront and the evening market before continuing north.
Three nights
The best option after a long-haul flight. Keep the arrival day relaxed, enjoy one complete sightseeing day and use the final morning before travelling to Vang Vieng or Luang Prabang.
Four nights
Appropriate when you want to recover slowly, enjoy the hotel, explore local cafés and restaurants or add an excursion outside the central visitor area.
Best areas to stay in Vientiane
Central Vientiane
The most practical base for a first visit, with easy access to restaurants, temples, shops and the city’s principal monuments.

and southern Laos in a short trip can create too many long travel days.
