For a first trip, I would normally spend 3 to 4 nights in Marrakech. That gives you enough time for the Medina, souks, palaces, gardens, food and a relaxed evening or two without making every day feel rushed. On a 7-night trip, I would strongly consider combining Marrakech with another part of Morocco.
If Marrakech is new to you, a well-reviewed riad inside or just on the edge of the Medina gives you the experience people imagine when they think of the city: a traditional courtyard, rooftop terrace, local design and the ability to walk straight into the souks.
If you value a large pool, easier taxi access, bigger rooms, lifts and resort-style facilities, a regular hotel in Hivernage or Gueliz may suit you better.
Best areas to stay in Marrakech
The right base depends on whether you want the full Medina experience or a more conventional hotel stay.
Stay here for riads, souks, rooftop terraces and walking access to the historic sights. It is atmospheric and memorable, but some lanes are pedestrian-only and luggage transfers can be less straightforward.
Restaurants, cafés, shops and modern hotels with easier taxi access. A good compromise if you want to visit the Medina during the day but sleep somewhere calmer and more conventional.
Larger hotels, pools, spas and a more resort-style atmosphere. A strong choice for couples or anyone prioritising comfort over staying inside the old city.
South of the main Medina action with historic sights and traditional accommodation. It can feel a little calmer while still keeping you close to the old city.
Riad vs regular hotel
Riads are usually smaller and more intimate, often built around a courtyard with a rooftop terrace.
They are ideal for atmosphere, local design and being close to the Medina.
Watch for: narrow pedestrian lanes, possible stairs, smaller plunge pools rather than large swimming pools,
and more variable room layouts. Check reviews carefully for noise, air-conditioning and exact access instructions.
Regular hotels are better if you want a large pool, gym, spa, lifts, bigger common areas, easier taxi drop-off and a more predictable room setup.
Best areas: Hivernage for upscale resorts and Gueliz for modern city hotels with restaurants and shops nearby.
Where to go next from Marrakech
If you have a full week, Marrakech works extremely well as part of a two-stop Morocco trip rather than spending all seven nights in the city.
What about the Sahara?
A proper Sahara trip to Merzouga is spectacular, but from Marrakech it involves long road transfers. For only seven nights in Morocco, I would usually choose Essaouira, the Atlas Mountains or Agafay instead. If the Sahara is a priority, give it at least 2–3 nights and accept that a large part of the trip will be spent travelling.
