How long should you stay in Naples?
Naples deserves more than being treated as an airport for the islands. Its historic streets, food, waterfront and access to Pompeii make it worth at least two or three nights. The city is also the natural starting point for a longer trip combining Capri, Ischia and the Amalfi Coast.
Use one day for the historic centre and food, one for the waterfront, Chiaia and Vomero, and one for Pompeii or another nearby excursion. Stay only two nights when most of your holiday will be spent on the islands or coast.
How many nights do you need?
Two nights
2Suitable when the main holiday is Capri, Ischia or the Amalfi Coast. You still have time for the historic centre, pizza, the waterfront and one relaxed evening in the city.
Three nights
3The best balance for a first visit. Explore Naples over two days and use the third for Pompeii, Herculaneum or the archaeological museum without turning the city into a rushed stopover.
Four nights
4Choose four nights when you prefer one accommodation base and want several excursions. This can include Pompeii, Procida, Capri or Ischia, although staying overnight on an island is usually more relaxing.
Best areas to stay in Naples
Chiaia and Santa Lucia
Our preferred choice for most first-time visitors who want restaurants, evening walks and a slightly calmer atmosphere close to the waterfront.
- Best for: couples and comfortable city breaks.
- Nearby: Lungomare, Villa Comunale and Piazza del Plebiscito.
- Atmosphere: polished, lively and convenient.
- Trade-off: generally more expensive than the historic centre.
Historic Centre
Choose the Centro Storico when food, churches, narrow streets and the intensity of old Naples are central to the experience.
- Best for: culture, food and nightlife.
- Nearby: Spaccanapoli and Via dei Tribunali.
- Advantage: many attractions within walking distance.
- Check: noise, stairs, lift access and exact street.
Vomero
Vomero suits travellers who prefer a more residential atmosphere, elevated views and less intensity than the old centre.
- Best for: families and quieter evenings.
- Nearby: Castel Sant’Elmo and panoramic viewpoints.
- Transport: funicular and metro connections.
- Trade-off: less convenient for late-night waterfront dining.
August can be extremely hot and busy, so confirm that the room has reliable air-conditioning. Read recent reviews for noise, cleanliness and the exact street. Check whether the building has a lift, especially in historic properties, and confirm late check-in if your flight is delayed. Avoid selecting accommodation near the railway station purely because it is cheap; examine the precise location and newest reviews first.
Where should you go after Naples?
Suggested itineraries for the available flights
Naples, one island and the coast
Do not attempt overnight stays on both Capri and Ischia within one week. Choose Ischia for relaxation or Capri for the iconic experience, then keep the final night in Naples before the morning flight home.
Naples, Ischia, Capri and the Amalfi Coast
Two weeks gives enough time to enjoy both islands without turning every second day into a transfer. The final Naples night protects the international departure from ferry disruption, rough seas or heavy road traffic.
Search Chiaia and Santa Lucia first for Naples, then compare the Historic Centre and Vomero. For the next part of the trip, search Ischia Porto, Forio, Capri, Anacapri, Sorrento, Amalfi, Minori and Maiori. Compare the full stay price, air-conditioning, newest reviews, cancellation terms, lift access and distance from the ferry port.
Hotel prices, ferry schedules, routes and availability can change quickly, particularly during August and around public holidays. Confirm the latest ferry, hydrofoil and bus schedules directly with the transport operator. Allow sufficient time for transfers and avoid placing a sea crossing too close to the return flight.
