Colombo
from €486 return
About this deal
Finally, a Sri Lanka fare with a schedule that departs and lands at a sensible time. The reference trip is 24 September – 07 October 2026, flying Etihad Airways from Munich to Colombo via Abu Dhabi for €486 return through Kissandfly via Skyscanner.
I have deliberately used the Economy Value fare with 25kg checked baggage included. The cabin-bag-only Basic fare can be roughly €40 cheaper, but for a Sri Lanka trip I think the checked-bag fare makes far more sense.
Availability is the catch. These are last-minute departures and only a small number of combinations had the timings I was happy to publish. There are other cheap dates that arrive into Colombo at around 03:00, but I have intentionally left those out.
Airline: Etihad Airways
Routing: 1 stop in Abu Dhabi
Checked baggage: 25kg included
Fare: Economy Value
Direct Etihad price checked: €532
Reference flight schedule
Etihad Airways throughout
Munich 21:35 → Abu Dhabi 06:20+1 · EY128
2h30 connection in AUH
Abu Dhabi 08:50 → Colombo 14:55 · EY390
This is the schedule I wanted to find: leave Munich in the evening, sleep through part of the journey and arrive in Colombo in the afternoon rather than at a ridiculous hour.
Etihad Airways throughout
Colombo 10:00 → Abu Dhabi 13:00 · EY393
1h20 connection in AUH
Abu Dhabi 14:20 → Munich 18:40 · EY127
The return is even cleaner: a morning departure from Colombo and arrival back in Munich at 18:40 the same day.
Baggage + fare details
A lot of the cheaper combinations I found arrive in Colombo at around 03:00 in the morning. I have not included those. The reference trip lands at 14:55 and the return leaves at 10:00, which makes the trip much more pleasant.
Availability is genuinely limited. These departures are only days away, so this is not a broad fare calendar. I have listed only the combinations that still looked practical when checked.

CMBColomboBooking options
Only about €46 more than the cheapest OTA fare on the reference dates. For that difference, I would personally prefer booking directly with Etihad and keeping the airline as the point of contact if plans change.
Search directly on Etihad →This is the lowest price I found for the reference trip and the fare proof used on the page. If the €46 saving matters more than booking directly, this is the cheaper route.
Check the €486 fare →The deal is intentionally built around Economy Value with 25kg checked baggage. Basic can be roughly €40 cheaper, but only includes cabin baggage. Before payment, make sure you are comparing the same fare family and baggage allowance.
Recheck the reference dates →Availability is limited and departures are very close. I found other cheap combinations, but several arrive into Colombo at around 03:00, so I have deliberately left those off this list.
Excellent value — finally with civilised timings. €486 return on Etihad with 25kg checked baggage, sensible connections and a genuinely useful schedule is a very strong Sri Lanka fare. The score is held back mainly by the very limited, last-minute availability.

Colombo hotel playbook
Colombo works very well as your first or final base, but Sri Lanka is far too interesting to spend a long trip in one city. I would normally book 1–2 nights in Colombo, then continue to the hill country, cultural triangle or south coast. For the longer date combinations, you can even turn the trip into a two-country holiday with the Maldives or southern India.
Colombo hotel prices can move quite a lot. Check the same room with Karma switched on before you pay — and always compare the final total, not just the nightly rate.
💰 Dino hotel booking method
Choose the area first, then shortlist hotels with strong recent reviews and the room type you actually want.
Leave Karma active while you browse so it can check whether the same stay appears cheaper elsewhere.
If Karma finds nothing useful, make one final like-for-like comparison before paying.
⏳ How many nights in Colombo?
Perfect if Colombo is simply your arrival or departure buffer before moving elsewhere.
Enough time for the city, food, Galle Face and a relaxed start before continuing around Sri Lanka.
Good if you want to explore at a slower pace or recover after the overnight flight from Europe.
I would only do this if Colombo itself is the focus. Otherwise, use those nights elsewhere in Sri Lanka.
📍 Best areas to stay in Colombo
A very convenient first-timer base with seafront access, restaurants and easy links across central Colombo.
Useful for historic central Colombo, transport links and a short first stay before travelling onward.
Greener and calmer, with a more residential feel and a good choice if you want less city-centre intensity.
Good for restaurants, shopping and coastal access, while still being practical for central Colombo.
🌎 Where to go after Colombo
Kandy
A natural next stop for the hill country, temples and the beginning of the classic inland route.
Ella
Mountain scenery, hiking and one of the most popular stops for travellers crossing the country.
Galle + south coast
Mix colonial Galle with beach time around places such as Mirissa, Weligama or Unawatuna.
Sigiriya / cultural triangle
A strong option if you want ancient sites, landscapes and a completely different side of Sri Lanka.
Maldives · 3–5 nights
Colombo is a very useful gateway to the Maldives. Add a few beach days at the end and turn one airfare into a much bigger trip.
Southern India · 3–5 nights
Chennai, Pondicherry or Kerala can work very well as a side quest if you have one of the longer date combinations.
⚠️ Colombo practical tips
Plan for tropical heat and humidity, especially if you are walking around the city during the middle of the day.
Short, heavy showers can happen, so leave some breathing room rather than planning every hour of the day.
The airport is not in central Colombo. Build a generous transfer buffer, especially before your flight home.
Keep valuables discreet, use normal caution in crowded areas and confirm transport prices before setting off.
City tours, food experiences, day trips and longer Sri Lanka excursions — useful if you want to add a few organised activities without turning the whole holiday into a package tour.
A few useful extras that can make the journey easier, particularly when travelling with restrictive cabin-bag fares, arriving late or needing mobile data as soon as you land.
A useful packing solution when you are trying to fit more clothing
into a restricted cabin bag.
Particularly relevant for travellers using airlines such as
Ryanair and Wizz Air, where baggage dimensions and
additional luggage fees can significantly change the final cost of a
cheap flight.
Compress your clothing and make better use of the space available
inside your luggage.
Arrive with mobile data ready and avoid searching for a local SIM
card or relying on airport Wi-Fi.

Particularly useful for
late-night arrivals, families and travellers with luggage
