Edinburgh is one of the more expensive city-break destinations in Europe. For a well-rated 3- or 4-star hotel in a convenient location, travellers should generally expect to pay from approximately €180 per room per night, with central prices often rising considerably above this level.
For the 5–15 November 2026 itinerary, we recommend spending three or four nights in Edinburgh before continuing into the Highlands. Ten nights are enough for a rewarding first Scotland trip, but the route should remain realistic because November brings shorter daylight hours, colder weather and a greater chance of transport disruption.
Begin with three nights in Edinburgh to explore the Old Town, Edinburgh Castle, the Royal Mile, Holyrood, Calton Hill and the city’s museums, restaurants and historic pubs.
Then travel north for a broader Scotland journey. Our preferred first-time route is Edinburgh → Inverness → the Highlands or Isle of Skye → Glasgow → Edinburgh Airport. This combines Scotland’s two largest visitor cities with dramatic scenery while avoiding an excessively rushed itinerary.
Travellers relying entirely on public transport should prioritise Edinburgh, Inverness and Glasgow, adding organised Highland excursions from Inverness. A rental car creates more freedom for Glencoe, Loch Ness, Fort William and Skye, but winter driving conditions and limited daylight must be taken seriously.
Well-rated central hotels are expensive and the strongest-value rooms can disappear quickly. Compare the final total and cancellation conditions before committing.
A cheaper property outside the centre may require taxis or lengthy bus journeys. Prioritise walking distance, tram access or proximity to Waverley or Haymarket stations.
