Tirana is compact, lively and easy to use as the start of an Albania trip. For most first-time visitors I would suggest 2–3 nights: enough time for the centre, Blloku, the museums and the food scene without using the whole trip in the capital.
For a short break, Tirana alone works perfectly well. If you have five nights or more, however, I would add Berat, Shkodër / the north or the Albanian Riviera. Albania is compact enough to combine very different experiences, but road journeys can still take longer than the map suggests.
Best areas to stay in Tirana
For a first trip, stay central. Tirana is very walkable and being near restaurants and cafés makes a short visit much easier.
Best all-round choice for restaurants, cafés, bars and an easy evening atmosphere. It is central enough for sightseeing while feeling more lively after dark than the immediate square area.
The easiest base if museums and major sights are the priority. Excellent for a short city break because much of central Tirana is within walking distance.
A colourful area around the New Bazaar with restaurants, cafés and a more local feel, while still being close enough to walk into the main centre.
Good if you prefer a slightly calmer base with green space nearby. You are still close to Blloku and the centre without being directly in the busiest streets.
