Northern Lights in NORWAY! Flights from Boston to Tromsø for $423 with SAS!

Northern Lights in Norway: Boston to Tromsø from $423 on SAS with cabin baggage included — a sharp fare into the Arctic Circle when aurora season is at its best and you want proper Scandinavian carrier service without paying peak-winter madness prices. Tromsø is Norway's aurora capital above the Arctic Circle: green ribbons dancing over fjords, husky sledding through snow, whale-watching season, cable-car views from Mount Storsteinen, and polar-night cosiness in harbour cafés when the sun barely rises — the kind of winter trip Americans usually assume costs twice this much.

Routing is asymmetric but manageable. Outbound to Tromsø has one stop on SAS's Scandinavian network; the return to Boston has two stops — worth noting before you book, but Dino checked the itineraries and the connections are short and well timed, not those punishing overnight airport camps that ruin an aurora holiday. Sale dates run December 2026, plus January and February 2027 — peak northern-lights windows when the sky is dark enough for the show and Tromsø's winter festival energy is in full swing.

Dino spotted this from around $423 through an online travel agency — and you can often book the same routing for a similar price directly on SAS's website if you prefer paying the airline and keeping everything in one place. Confirm exact connection airports and layover lengths both directions, whether you depart Boston from BOS or a nearby airport, SAS cabin-bag size limits, fare rules, and warm-layer packing for Arctic winter before you pay.

Dino Score 8.5 out of 10

A strong Northern Lights fare from Boston to Tromsø with SAS, broad winter availability and an excellent one-stop outbound itinerary.

Dino Verdict

Strong value for a winter Northern Lights trip to Tromsø

Return flights from Boston to Tromsø are available from approximately $423 through selected travel suppliers.

The same itinerary is available directly from SAS for around $433. The small price difference may be worthwhile, particularly if you want to add checked baggage, select seats or manage the booking directly with the operating airline.

The outbound itinerary is particularly attractive, with only one protected connection in Copenhagen and a total journey time of approximately 11 hours and 40 minutes.

The return uses two protected connections, in Oslo and Copenhagen, and takes approximately 15 hours and 40 minutes. It is longer, but the individual waiting times remain manageable.

Seven one-week combinations were found across December, January and February, all using the same general flight schedule.

These months provide long winter nights and several opportunities to join Northern Lights excursions, although aurora sightings are never guaranteed and remain dependent on weather and solar activity.

Price 9.1/10

Around $423–$433 return is very competitive for a winter itinerary between Boston and Arctic Norway.

Outbound routing 8.9/10

Only one protected connection in Copenhagen, with a practical 1-hour-40-minute wait and arrival in Tromsø before midday.

Return routing 7.2/10

The return requires two stops in Oslo and Copenhagen, making it the main weakness of the itinerary.

Schedules 7.8/10

The Boston departure and Tromsø arrival are convenient, but the 06:00 return departure requires a very early start.

Aurora timing 9.4/10

December through February offers long dark nights and strong seasonal conditions for joining Northern Lights excursions.

Baggage 7.0/10

Cabin baggage is included, but checked baggage costs extra. Winter clothing may make a larger baggage allowance useful.

Availability 9.1/10

Seven one-week combinations are available across December, January and February at a consistent price level.

Overall value 8.7/10

The low fare, strong outbound routing and excellent winter timing outweigh the longer two-stop return and cabin-only baggage.

Why this deal stands out

Tromsø is one of Europe’s most popular Northern Lights destinations, and winter fares from the United States can often be considerably more expensive.

At approximately $423–$433 return, this deal provides an affordable opportunity to experience Arctic Norway during the heart of aurora season.

Consider booking directly with SAS

The lowest fares are available through third-party travel suppliers, while SAS offers the same itinerary for around $433.

Booking directly with SAS is likely to be the most convenient option if you need to add checked baggage, choose seats or make changes later. The small price difference may provide better overall value than booking through the cheapest online agency.

Confirm the final baggage cost before payment, as bulky winter clothing may be difficult to fit into cabin baggage alone.

Best for: travellers planning a one-week Northern Lights trip from Boston who prioritise price and seasonal timing.

Less ideal for: travellers who dislike very early departures, want a one-stop return journey or require checked baggage included in the base fare.

Dino’s advice: compare the $423 agency fare with the approximately $433 SAS price. Paying around $10 more directly to SAS is likely the better choice, especially when adding checked baggage.

Where to stay in Tromsø: allow a generous budget for accommodation

Despite its relatively small size, Tromsø offers a surprisingly broad selection of hotels, apartments and guest accommodation. Its popularity as one of Europe’s leading Northern Lights destinations means that demand can be exceptionally strong throughout the winter season.

As is often the case in Norway, accommodation prices are considerably higher than in many other parts of Europe. During popular aurora-viewing periods, travellers should expect even fairly basic hotel rooms to cost more than $300 per night.

When travelling as a couple, this works out at approximately $150 per person per night. Over a one-week trip, the accommodation cost may therefore be significantly higher than the return flights from Boston.

For our sample search from 2 December to 8 December, centrally located hotels were among the most expensive options. Staying close to Tromsø’s harbour and main streets is convenient for restaurants, sightseeing and tour departures, but travellers pay a considerable premium for that location.

Apartments and accommodation with kitchen facilities can provide better overall value, particularly for longer stays. Preparing some meals independently may help offset Tromsø’s high restaurant and everyday living costs.

Before choosing a cheaper property outside the centre, check the distance to the departure points used by your Northern Lights, fjord, reindeer or husky tours. Some excursions begin early or finish late at night, when public transport may be less frequent.

Dino tip: reserve accommodation as early as possible once your flights are confirmed. Tromsø has plenty of properties for a city of its size, but the most reasonably priced and best-located rooms can disappear quickly during the winter season.

Sample prices were checked for 2–8 December for two adults. Prices and availability can change. Confirm the final total, taxes, exact location, transport connections, breakfast inclusions, kitchen facilities, recent reviews, room category and cancellation conditions before booking.
