Santa Cruz de la Sierra is a good place to begin a Bolivia trip after the nonstop flight from Madrid. It is warmer, lower and easier to acclimatise in than La Paz, so I would normally spend 2 to 3 nights here before moving deeper into the country.
2 nights is enough if Santa Cruz is mainly your arrival point and you want to continue quickly. 3 nights is better if you want time for the historic centre, restaurants, a relaxed first day after the flight and possibly a short excursion before heading elsewhere.
For longer trips, Santa Cruz works best as the starting point rather than the entire holiday. Bolivia becomes much more interesting once you combine it with places such as Sucre, La Paz and especially the Salar de Uyuni.
Best areas to stay in Santa Cruz
For a short first stay, I would prioritise convenience over trying to cover the whole city.
Best for the cathedral, historic centre, cafés and an easy first introduction to Santa Cruz on foot.
Modern hotels, restaurants and nightlife. A strong choice if you prefer a polished, comfortable city base.
Close to Equipetrol but generally calmer, with good access to restaurants and newer accommodation.
Useful only for a late arrival, very early departure or one-night transit. Otherwise I would stay closer to the centre.
Where to go next in Bolivia
With the long stay options available on this fare, I would strongly consider adding at least two or three other destinations.
Suggested longer itinerary
One logical route would be: Santa Cruz 2–3 nights → Sucre 2–3 nights → Uyuni 2–3 days → La Paz 3 nights, leaving a few flexible days for travel, Samaipata, Lake Titicaca or an extra night where you enjoy it most.
