Vientiane
from €528 return
About this deal
A very strong Budapest to Vientiane fare with
China Southern, routing via Guangzhou in both directions.
The lowest price shown on the reference search is €528 return with Lastminute.com.
The fare includes 1 × 23 kg checked baggage, which materially improves the value.
For Laos, where one-stop fares from Central Europe are often much less competitive, this is a particularly interesting find.
The outbound schedule is good: a midday departure from Budapest and a morning arrival into Vientiane.
The return is less attractive because of a 5h10 connection in Guangzhou, but the overall routing remains simple.
Routing: 1 stop each way via Guangzhou
Checked baggage: 1 × 23 kg included
Reference stay: 10 actual hotel nights
Travel window: late Sep - mid Oct 2026

The reference Skyscanner search showed Lastminute.com at €528 return. Other providers on the same search included Mytrip at around €557.
Check current price →The fare includes 1 × 23 kg checked baggage. That makes the €528 headline fare substantially stronger than a cabin-bag-only long-haul fare. Always reconfirm the allowance on the final booking page before payment.
Compare providers →Why this fare works + important details
€528 return with 23 kg checked baggage and only one stop each way is excellent value for Vientiane. The outbound is particularly good: Budapest at 12:45, a comfortable 3h35 connection and arrival in Laos at 10:30 the next morning.
1. Long return connection: the Guangzhou layover is 5h10.
2. Long return journey: total travel time is 19h40.
3. Overnight long-haul sector: CAN 00:50 → BUD 06:30 is an 11h40 overnight flight.
4. OTA pricing: the lowest €528 fare was shown with Lastminute.com. Mytrip was around €557, so compare the provider conditions before choosing purely on price.

Excellent price, 23 kg checked baggage and a simple one-stop routing to a destination that is usually harder to price well from Central Europe. The long 5h10 Guangzhou connection on the return and the 19h40 total return journey are the main reasons this does not score even higher.

Vientiane is much smaller and easier to navigate than most Southeast Asian capitals. For a first visit, I would stay fairly central — ideally around the Mekong riverside, Nam Phou / city centre, or the area around Patuxai. You will be close to restaurants, temples and the main sights without spending half the day in taxis.
Vientiane has plenty of inexpensive guesthouses, boutique hotels and larger international properties. I would prioritise location, recent guest reviews and air-conditioning over paying extra for a resort-style hotel.
Where to stay in Vientiane
For most first-time visitors, I would lean toward the Mekong riverside or Nam Phou. They make evenings much easier and keep most of the central sights within a short walk or tuk-tuk ride.
How long to stay + suggested trip
I would normally spend 2–3 nights in Vientiane. That is enough for the riverside, Patuxai, Pha That Luang, Wat Si Saket, cafés and a relaxed look around the capital. The bigger opportunity with these fares is having enough time to travel north.
Where to go next
Vang Vieng
Limestone scenery, lagoons, viewpoints and outdoor activities. An easy addition between Vientiane and Luang Prabang.
Luang Prabang
The cultural highlight for many visitors: temples, colonial architecture, waterfalls and a much more atmospheric old town.
Nong Khiaw
A quieter northern option with dramatic mountain scenery if you have enough time beyond Luang Prabang.
Nong Khai / Thailand
Across the Mekong from Vientiane. Useful if you want to combine Laos with northeast Thailand.
Vietnam
Possible as a second-country extension if you have the 12–14 night options and do not mind adding another flight.
For most people I would keep it simple: Vientiane → Vang Vieng → Luang Prabang. It gives you three very different sides of Laos without turning the holiday into a constant series of travel days.
Airport + practical notes
Wattay International Airport (VTE) is only a few kilometres from the city centre,
so the airport transfer is usually straightforward.
For the riverside and central hotel areas, allow roughly 15–25 minutes by car in normal traffic.
Vientiane is generally an easy city to explore. Use normal big-city precautions with valuables,
agree tuk-tuk prices before travelling when there is no meter, and keep some local cash for smaller businesses.
For intercity rail travel, book popular trains in advance when possible because the best departure times can sell out.
