Where to stay in Malta: good value if you choose the right area
Malta has a wide range of accommodation, from simple budget hotels and apartments to seafront resorts and 5-star stays. For most travellers, areas such as Sliema, St Julian’s, Gżira and Valletta are practical choices because they offer good access to restaurants, ferries, public transport, nightlife and day trips around the island.
On sample searches for 24/06 to 02/07, affordable 3-star hotels and simple apartment-style stays could be found from around €70–€100 per night per room. When travelling as a couple, that can work out from roughly €35–€50 per person per night, which pairs very well with a low-cost direct flight deal.
Better-rated 4-star hotels in convenient locations generally sit higher, often around €100–€150 per night, while resort-style or 5-star properties can cost significantly more, especially in popular areas and during the summer season. The good news is that Malta still offers a useful range of choices depending on whether you want budget, location, beach access or more comfort.
Dino’s tip: for a first Malta trip, Sliema and Gżira are usually strong value bases because they are well connected and often cheaper than staying directly in Valletta. St Julian’s is better for nightlife and restaurants, while Mellieħa or the north of the island can make more sense if your priority is beaches and a slower holiday rhythm.
