The 10 Most Overrated Landmarks in the World

Some are beautiful. Some are historically important. Some are genuine masterpieces. But crowds, inflated expectations and disappointing visitor experiences can make even the world's most famous attractions feel overrated.

This is a personal ranking based on the complete visitor experience—not an attack on the historical, cultural or artistic importance of these places.

Can a great landmark still be overrated?

Absolutely. Calling somewhere overrated does not necessarily mean that it is ugly, boring or unimportant.

A landmark can be genuinely impressive and still deliver a disappointing experience. Sometimes the problem is the enormous crowd. Sometimes the attraction looks much smaller than expected. Sometimes visitors spend hours travelling, queuing and fighting for photographs, only to enjoy the actual landmark for a few rushed minutes.

Social media has also created impossibly polished expectations. We see an empty square at sunset, a perfect reflection or a famous monument without another tourist in sight. The reality may involve hundreds of raised phones, tour groups, barriers, queues and overpriced cafés.

Here is my personal ranking of the 10 most overrated landmarks and tourist attractions in the world . You may disagree—and that is part of the fun.

Few symbols are as instantly recognisable as the enormous white letters overlooking Los Angeles. The Hollywood Sign represents cinema, celebrity and the dream of making it in the entertainment industry.

The problem is that there is not very much to experience once you get there. Visitors cannot simply walk up and pose beside the letters. Instead, much of the adventure involves navigating Los Angeles traffic, finding an appropriate viewpoint or completing a hike for a view from behind or above the sign.

It remains an essential Los Angeles photograph, but the symbol often feels more powerful on a cinema screen than it does in person.

Temple Bar is not one individual monument, but it has become one of Dublin's best-known tourist landmarks. Its colourful pubs, cobbled streets and live music create exactly the image of Ireland many international visitors expect.

Unfortunately, that popularity has also made it feel like a carefully packaged version of Irish nightlife. The most famous pubs can be packed from early in the day, drinks are often considerably more expensive than elsewhere and the surrounding streets can feel dominated by tourists.

It is still worth walking through, listening to the music and taking a photograph. But Dublin has many more authentic pubs and neighbourhoods where the atmosphere feels less staged and the prices are kinder.

Visit for the atmosphere and the photograph—but consider having your drinks somewhere else.

Stonehenge is one of the world's most mysterious prehistoric monuments. Its age, construction and unknown original purpose make it historically fascinating.

The standard visitor experience can nevertheless feel underwhelming. After travelling into the English countryside, most visitors follow a designated route around the stones rather than walking freely among them. The monument can look smaller than expected, especially when seen from behind a busy line of other visitors.

Anyone fascinated by archaeology may love the visit. But travellers expecting an immersive, mystical experience may instead feel that they have travelled a long way to look at a distant group of stones in a windy field.

Extraordinary history, but the normal visitor experience can feel distant and surprisingly anticlimactic.

The Leaning Tower is genuinely unusual and the surrounding Piazza dei Miracoli is one of the most beautiful monumental squares in Italy. The cathedral and baptistery deserve just as much attention as the famous tower.

Unfortunately, many visitors arrive as part of a rushed excursion, spend most of their time attempting the same photograph pretending to hold the tower upright and then leave without seeing much of Pisa.

The endless photography routine can make the square feel more like an outdoor social-media studio than a historic site. The tower is worth seeing, but the experience becomes much better when you slow down and appreciate the entire complex.

Come for the tower, but stay for the magnificent square and give Pisa more than a rushed novelty photograph.

Seeing Times Square illuminated at night for the first time can be exciting. The enormous screens, yellow taxis, theatres and sea of people create a scene that feels unmistakably New York.

After the first few minutes, however, the experience may begin to feel like standing inside a giant advertisement. The area is packed with chain restaurants, souvenir shops, costumed characters and people competing for your attention.

New York is filled with neighbourhoods offering better food, more personality and a much more authentic sense of the city. Times Square deserves one visit, but it does not deserve to dominate your itinerary.

See it once after dark, take your photograph and then escape into the far more interesting parts of New York.

The Great Wall itself is not overrated. It is one of humanity's most extraordinary engineering achievements, stretching across enormous distances and dramatic landscapes.

The problem is the experience offered by many standard tours from Beijing. Tour companies frequently visit the easiest and most accessible sections, particularly areas that have been extensively rebuilt and adapted for mass tourism.

Instead of finding an ancient wall disappearing through empty mountains, visitors may encounter renovated stonework, cable cars, souvenir sellers and enormous groups moving through the same narrow spaces.

The experience can feel more like a reconstructed attraction than an adventurous encounter with history. Less convenient sections can provide a far more atmospheric and memorable experience, but they require additional research, travelling time or a specialised tour.

The Great Wall is extraordinary. The crowded, heavily reconstructed section selected by your tour operator may not be.

The Gates of Heaven at Lempuyang Temple have become one of Bali's most famous social-media images. In photographs, the split gateway frames Mount Agung while the visitor appears to stand beside a perfectly calm reflective pool.

Many people are disappointed to discover that the famous reflection is normally created by placing a mirror beneath the camera. The large, dreamlike body of water seen across social media is not really there.

Visitors may also travel for hours and then wait through a long photography queue for a few carefully directed poses. A sacred and culturally important temple complex can consequently feel reduced to an organised Instagram production line.

The Little Mermaid is a charming sculpture connected to one of Denmark's most famous stories. The problem is not the statue itself—it is the enormous expectation attached to such a modest landmark.

Visitors often arrive expecting a monumental waterfront attraction and instead find a relatively small bronze figure sitting quietly on a rock. The scene can be surrounded by buses, cameras and people climbing over one another to get a clear photograph.

Copenhagen is one of Europe's most enjoyable and attractive cities. Its neighbourhoods, harbour areas, palaces, food scene and cycling culture are far more rewarding than this very brief photo stop.

The Mona Lisa is unquestionably one of the most important and famous paintings in history. The Louvre is also one of the world's greatest museums and deserves far more than a hurried visit.

The modern experience of seeing the Mona Lisa, however, can be deeply disappointing. Visitors crowd into the room, raise phones above their heads and slowly move towards a painting that is smaller than many first-time visitors expect.

The artwork is protected behind glass and is normally viewed from a distance, making quiet appreciation almost impossible. Meanwhile, exceptional paintings and sculptures elsewhere in the museum receive a fraction of the attention.

The Louvre is essential. Fighting through a wall of phones for a distant glimpse of one small painting is not.

The Trevi Fountain is not overrated as a work of art. It is magnificent. The dramatic sculptures, flowing water and surrounding architecture form one of Rome's most spectacular urban scenes.

The problem is that the small square was never designed to handle the enormous number of people now trying to occupy it. During the busiest periods, visitors stand shoulder to shoulder, protect their photography positions and compete to reach the edge of the fountain.

Instead of admiring the details, listening to the water and enjoying the atmosphere, much of the experience becomes an exercise in looking past raised phones and other people's heads.

Visit very early in the morning and the Trevi Fountain can still be one of the most magical places in Rome. Arrive in the middle of a busy day and its beauty can be almost completely overwhelmed by its popularity.

A genuine masterpiece whose modern visitor experience has been almost destroyed by its own fame.

Overrated does not mean you should never visit

Several places on this list remain historically important, visually impressive and completely deserving of their worldwide fame. The Trevi Fountain is beautiful. The Great Wall is an astonishing achievement. Stonehenge is an archaeological treasure. The Mona Lisa is one of the most influential paintings ever created.

The disappointment usually comes from the modern experience surrounding them: excessive crowds, unrealistic social-media images, rushed package tours and the belief that every famous place must become the highlight of your trip.

Sometimes the landmark is not the problem. The way we are told to experience it is.

The best solution is often to arrive early, travel outside peak season, choose a less commercial entrance or viewpoint and stop treating every famous attraction as a compulsory photo assignment.
