New communityNew York can easily fill a full week, but for most first-time visitors I would aim for 4–5 nights. That is enough time to see the major Manhattan highlights, explore a couple of neighbourhoods properly and still leave room for Brooklyn or another side trip.
For the cheaper 5–7 night Aer Lingus combinations, I would usually keep one hotel for the whole stay. Changing hotels inside New York rarely saves enough time to justify the hassle.
New York hotel prices can change dramatically by neighbourhood and date. I would compare the same stay in Midtown, Lower Manhattan and Long Island City before booking because the difference can easily be substantial.
There is no single best neighbourhood for everyone. These are the areas I would compare first depending on the kind of trip you want.

Spend 3–4 days exploring Manhattan and use one day for Brooklyn or another neighbourhood-heavy day.
Focus on Midtown, Central Park, Lower Manhattan and one evening downtown. I would not add an overnight side trip.
Add Brooklyn, museums, shopping and slower neighbourhood days. This is especially useful for Christmas / New Year dates when queues and crowds can slow everything down.
