For a first visit, I would normally spend 3 to 4 nights in Abu Dhabi. If you have a full week, splitting the trip with Dubai can make a lot of sense because the two cities feel very different: Abu Dhabi is generally calmer and more spread out, while Dubai is busier, denser and more focused on shopping, nightlife and big-ticket attractions.
This gives you enough time for the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Corniche, Louvre Abu Dhabi, Yas Island and a relaxed beach day, then lets you finish with Downtown Dubai, Dubai Marina, the Palm and Old Dubai.
If you prefer a more relaxed holiday, keep all 7 nights in Abu Dhabi and do Dubai as a day trip. If shopping, nightlife and skyline attractions are a bigger priority, reverse the split and spend 3 nights in Abu Dhabi + 4 in Dubai.
Best areas to stay in Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is more spread out than many first-time visitors expect, so location matters.
The easiest all-round choice for a first visit. Good access to the waterfront, restaurants, city sights and taxis. Strong if you want to balance sightseeing with a central location.
Best for luxury beach resorts, quieter surroundings and easy access to Louvre Abu Dhabi. Great for couples and travellers who want more of a resort feel.
Ideal for Ferrari World, Warner Bros. World, Yas Waterworld and Yas Marina. Excellent for families, but less convenient if your priority is central Abu Dhabi sightseeing.
Often a good place to find competitively priced city hotels with easy taxi access and plenty of restaurants nearby.
Should you split the trip with Dubai?
Best for the Grand Mosque, Louvre Abu Dhabi, Corniche, beach resorts, Yas Island and a more relaxed atmosphere.
Best for Burj Khalifa, Dubai Mall, Marina, the Palm, Old Dubai, nightlife and the more intense big-city experience.
