The 2–9 January combination falls close to the New Year holiday period, so hotels and ski accommodation may be particularly expensive or busy. The later January dates may offer a better balance between winter conditions, crowds and accommodation prices.
Travellers should expect cold weather, short daylight hours and potentially challenging road conditions in mountain areas.
A well-priced base for Salzburg and winter road trips
Our search for 2–9 January 2027 uncovered a hotel that immediately caught our attention. It is not in Salzburg’s historical centre, but its good reviews, free parking and price approximately 30% below similarly rated alternatives in our search make it an excellent choice for travellers planning to hire a car.
Four Points Flex by Sheraton Salzburg Messe
Liefering · Near Salzburg Messe · Free on-site parking
Four Points Flex by Sheraton Salzburg Messe is a
straightforward and modern three-star hotel in the Liefering and
Messe area, north of central Salzburg.
Its location will not suit travellers who want to step outside
directly into the Old Town. However, it becomes much more attractive
for anyone hiring a car and planning to explore Salzburg,
Berchtesgaden, the Salzkammergut or the surrounding mountain areas.
The displayed Standard King Room measures approximately
18 m² and includes an extra-large double bed,
private bathroom, city view, flat-screen television and free Wi-Fi.
Guest feedback was particularly positive for the cleanliness, staff
and breakfast.
The hotel also offers
free on-site parking, 24-hour reception, heating, a lift and
laundry facilities. This combination is useful during a
winter road trip, especially when comparing it with central hotels
charging substantial daily parking fees.

Why this hotel caught our attention
During our search, the displayed room was approximately
30% cheaper than other Salzburg hotels with broadly similar
guest ratings.
It is not a luxury property and the rooms are relatively compact, but
the combination of a low weekly price, reliable reviews and free
parking makes the overall value difficult to ignore.
How many nights should you spend in Salzburg?
Enough for the main city sights
Three nights are normally sufficient for Salzburg’s Old Town, Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mirabell, the Mozart attractions and a relaxed evening in the centre.
Ideal with a car and day trips
The featured one-week flight dates are excellent when Salzburg is treated as a regional base rather than as a seven-day city break. Spend two days in Salzburg and use the remaining days for lakes, mountains, Bavaria or skiing.
Consider a split stay
Travellers planning several consecutive ski days may prefer four nights in Salzburg followed by three nights closer to the chosen resort, avoiding repeated winter drives from the city.
Important location note
The hotel is not within comfortable walking distance of Salzburg’s
historical centre.
This should be viewed as a deliberate trade-off: guests receive a
lower hotel price and free parking but need to drive, use a taxi or
take public transport for city sightseeing.
For visits to the centre, avoid searching for expensive Old Town
parking. Use the public-transport connections serving the Messe area
or a suitable park-and-ride option instead.
Best day trips during the week
The hotel’s motorway access and free parking make it better suited to regional exploration than a central city hotel.
Hallstatt and the Salzkammergut
Combine Hallstatt with scenic stops around the lake district, such as St. Gilgen, Wolfgangsee or Bad Ischl, depending on weather and winter opening schedules.
- Best for: lakes and Alpine scenery.
- Allow a complete day.
- Start early to avoid rushing.
Berchtesgaden and Bavaria
Cross into Germany for Berchtesgaden, the salt mine, Königssee, Bad Reichenhall or winter scenery around the national-park area.
- Best for: mountains and salt history.
- Check seasonal transport and attraction hours.
- Carry the correct travel documents.
Zell am See and Kaprun
Visit Lake Zell, enjoy the mountain scenery or plan a ski day at Schmittenhöhe or the Kitzsteinhorn area when conditions and ability levels are suitable.
- Best for: skiing and winter landscapes.
- Allow a full day.
- Check road and lift conditions before leaving.
Gaisberg, Untersberg or Hallein
Keep one flexible day for a shorter excursion close to Salzburg. Choose mountain views in good weather or a salt and museum day around Hallein when conditions are less favourable.
- Best for: a flexible final day.
- Suitable as a half-day excursion.
- Recheck winter operating hours.
Should you stay here all week or move elsewhere?
For a mixed sightseeing and day-trip holiday, stay here for
the complete seven nights.
The favourable weekly rate and free parking compensate for the
non-central location, and changing hotels would add packing,
check-in time and potentially much higher accommodation costs.
A split stay becomes worthwhile only when the trip is mainly about
skiing or mountain atmosphere. In that case, spend three or four
nights here for Salzburg and nearby excursions, then move for two or
three nights to Zell am See, Kaprun, Flachau, Saalbach or another
resort selected according to snow conditions and ability level.

Winter driving advice
Confirm that the rental car is equipped for Austrian winter
conditions and ask whether the rental agreement permits travel into
Germany.
Check the weather, road conditions and parking arrangements each
morning. Mountain journeys can take considerably longer during snow,
ice or heavy weekend traffic.
Do not attempt remote mountain roads simply because a navigation app
suggests them. Use established routes and switch to a city or museum
day when conditions are poor.
Search hotels in Salzburg
Compare Four Points Flex by Sheraton Salzburg Messe with hotels in the Old Town, near the main railway station and around the Messe and Liefering districts. Search from 2 to 9 January 2027 for the reference flight dates.
