A strong Christmas and New Year fare from Athens to Bangkok

Return flights from Athens to Bangkok are available from around €690 with Juneyao Airlines. The fare includes 23 kg checked baggage, cabin baggage and flights covering both Christmas and New Year.

This is a particularly attractive price because the trip falls during one of the busiest and most expensive periods of the year. Travellers can arrive in Bangkok before Christmas and remain in Thailand through New Year’s Eve and the first days of January.

The itinerary includes one connection at Shanghai Pudong Airport in each direction. The outbound journey takes approximately 18 hours 40 minutes, with a connection of around 4 hours 15 minutes.

The return journey is longer at approximately 22 hours 25 minutes, including a connection of around 5 hours 55 minutes. It is not the fastest itinerary, but it avoids an extremely long overnight airport stop or a complicated multi-airline combination.

Where to stay in Bangkok: rooftop-pool comfort from just €60 per night

Bangkok is one of those destinations where comfort and affordability still come together surprisingly well. Even during the busy Christmas and New Year period, accommodation can remain very affordable by European standards.

For our sample search from 23/12 to 24/12, well-rated 4 and 5-star hotels, including properties with rooftop swimming pools, were available from around €60 per night.

That works out at only approximately €30 per person per night when travelling as a couple. For that price, travellers can often enjoy a modern room, air conditioning, excellent facilities and a comfortable base close to Bangkok’s transport network.

Treat yourself rather than automatically choosing the cheapest guesthouse. A good-value upscale hotel can make a major difference after a long overnight journey, especially when it offers a rooftop pool, breakfast, luggage storage and easy access to the BTS Skytrain or MRT.

Convenient areas to compare include Sukhumvit for restaurants, nightlife and transport, Silom for central access and rooftop venues, Siam for shopping and major attractions, and the Riverside for a more scenic and relaxed stay.

Bangkok is also an excellent starting point rather than the only destination. Thailand has far more to offer, including Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai in the north, tropical islands and beaches in the south, historic Ayutthaya, Kanchanaburi and national parks.
